In 2008, Strive Community Trust recognised that there had to be an opportunity for families to have a hand-up rather than a handout; giving families the opportunity to turn their unwanted bric-a-brac, clothing and household effects into dollars and pick up a bargain from stallholders themselves. It also gives families, schools, community and sporting groups the opportunity to fundraise towards a chosen project. Each year the event attracted over 2000people from Mangere, Manukau and Auckland region. Bric-a-brac and food stalls including face painting, bouncy castles, music and a great atmosphere are all on the agenda. The event is hosted by the Youth Development within Strive. The Youth Development Service Team works predominately with youth from Mangere, encouraging them to make positive choices and to take responsibility for their actions. Strive believes by getting troubled youth involved sooner rather then later in preventative interactive programmes, run by positive role models and involving their families when determining solutions, is the key to the programme success. Strive Community Trust has recently made its buildings Smokefree so this will be a smokefree event.
